The Society's longevity of over 150 years is due to its members' continuing interest in the natural world - its flora, fauna and geology. A key activity for the Society is to enthuse the public's awareness of, and commitment to, local wildlife and its environment. The links above will take you directly to many interesting pages, but you may like to peruse this overview as well
A Regular events programme is prepared each year and the details are provided in the annual programme. See also the Social media links above where you can add them directly to your calendar.
Regular lecture meetings are held in the Ararat Baptist Community Centre 21 Plas Treoda, Cardiff CF14 1PT. All indoor meetings are free to members of the society, but also please feel free to come along for a trial meeting to join us at no cost and hopefully we can persuade you to join us at future meetings as a member of the society which is at very low cost.
Topics cover all aspects of Wildlife, The Environment, Geology
and related interests. With a mix of talks on local places both in and around Cardiff and the wider world.
They are suitable for all levels of knowledge. Time beforehand allows members to chat and socialise.
At our Christmas meeting we try and have a bit of fun and at our annual Members evening members show their own pictures
in a highly informal and friendly setting.
Field meetings are held throughout the year, particularly in spring
and summer. They vary from half-day to full day excursions and visit
a wide range of localities. On many there is a formal guide, but on others the members help each other out
as we've many skills between us and there is usually plenty of expertise on hand to help with identification, and if not then pictures can be taken and follow up via social media or in our newsletter
members do get a number of benefits such as the Newsletter which is published three times per year to coincide with when we publish updates to planned events. They also get email notification of events with priority for things that are limited in number such as the recent visit to the Eleanor Vachell collection in the National Herbarium at the National Museum of Wales which you can read about in Newsletter 136

Depending on the time of year we may be looking at birds, or butterflies or the wonderful flowers that we have around us. Such as this orchid seen on one of our late spring/early summer walks
Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis)
As well as Wildife we like to take a look at geological sites and have recently explored rock formations and fossils of the Glamorgan Heritage The coast has also featured in seashore "rockpool rambles" carefully timed to coincide with low tide conditions.
The Jurassic Rocks of the Glamorgan Coast
Nature Study Days are held at sites in Cardiff with potential conservation value in order to record their wildlife. Grangemore Parc, Cwm Nofydd and Parc Tredelerch have all been covered. The data is passed SEWBReC, the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre. Copies of some of the reports can be seen here..
Species listings for the Parks, Reserves and other sites that the society has surveyed in recently years are available on this website
